Located adjacent to Memphis, Tennessee, DeSoto County is now among the forty fastest growing counties in the United States. This fast-paced growth is attributed to middle-class flight from Memphis. This has been most noticeable in the cities of Southaven, Olive Branch and Hernando. Also fuelling development is the massive casino/resort complex located in neighboring Tunica County, Mississippi (the third largest gambling district in the United States).

As of 2000, the population was 107,199. By 2008 the county grew to an estimated population of 154,748. It is now the third most populous county in Mississippi and the second most populous county in metro Memphis.

DeSoto County is Located in North Western Mississippi Just south of Memphis on the Tennessee Border.

The Cities that are within the county Borders are as follows: Hernando, Horn Lake, Olive Branch and Southaven.

Also within the County Limits are: The town of Walls and the Unincorporated places: Cockrum, Eudora, Lake Cormorant, Lake View, Mineral Wells, Nesbit and Pleasant Hill.

The county seat, Hernando, is named in honor of Spanish explorer Hernando De Soto.
